Do labrador retrievers need a big backyard?

We had a border Collie on 4.5 acres and it was not enough space for a healthy environment for the dog he needed more space to run and exercise he became lethargic and listless we finally gave him to a friend with over 30 acres and he perked up tremendously he explores every inch of the property and when we visit he shows his appreciation for our decision to allow him enough space to live the way a Border Collie should!!
