How did members of opposing parties become president and vice president in the election of 1796?

There were no Vice Presidential elections in the U.S. before 1804. Whoever came in second in the Presidential election became Vice President, and in 1796 Thomas Jefferson received more votes than John Adams' running-mate, Thomas Pinckney.
