Although Newfoundland had many European settlers between the time John Cabot discovered the island in 1497, includng English, French and Portuguese, and 1583 when Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed Newfoundland as a British colonny, it was John Guy who brought colonists over from England in 1610 to establish a permenant settlement. By 1620 Newfoundland was firmly established as a colony of England. Cheers Malcolm peace out!!!
