"Gypsies" are people, good and bad like everyone else. There are Romani populations in many parts of the world, each with their own history and their own culture. Historically, most people outside the Romani culture viewed Gypsies with suspicion and for most of their history, they have been shunned and excluded by the societies around them. They couldn't own land, they would not be hired, they were seldom allowed to reside in local communities. Their cultures were formed under centuries of these circumstances. Because of this, the Romani cultures developed their own social systems and beliefs. The old beliefs and mistrust of Gypsies persists in many places still. It's common to mistrust 'outsiders', people who are different, when you don't think through your opinions or you rely on hearsay as fact. Like any group of people anywhere, there are always a handful of members that can't be trusted, that do 'bad things'. Societies around them are quick to zero in and point to the bad Apples as representing all Gypsies.
Why does everyone think Gypsies are bad. They're good people! I had a Gypsy project in high school when I was 14, and at first I didn't think they were good. But, as I got to know them, they were really nice. I say don't judge a book by its cover!
