Why were the Nuremberg trials held at the end of World War 2?

Nuremberg was the unofficial capital of Nazi Germany. It was regarded as the most German of all cities and because of this, it was Hitler's favorite city. Nuremberg was where the Nazis held their famous rallies. The city was bombed by America in January 1945 because of its importance to Hitler and the Nazis, and 90% of the historic part of the city was destroyed.

Because of its association with the Nazis, Nuremberg was chosen as the site of the war crimes trials after the war. Previously, Nuremberg had been the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation for 500 years.
