What percentage of the US population is gay?

Many people confidently assert 10% to be the percentage of people with a homosexual orientation. However, this number is actually derived from Alfred C. Kinsey's survey on human sexual behavior in 1948. This was, however, only a quasi-experiment due to the survey's use of an unrepresentative sample of the population (the people who participated in the survey were nearly exclusively members of cooperative organizations, located mostly in the U.S. Midwest).

Later experiments utilizing random population samples-- the agreed most accurate method of population sampling-- found that 2.8% of men and 1.4% of women describe themselves as having a gay orientation. Three other large studies have found 1 to 2%, 3%, or 6% of U.S. men were either gay or bisexual. Surveys in other countries have reported similar or slightly lower percentages.

A theory proposed by Billy et al shows that perhaps only as little as 2% of the population is exclusively gay, while the rest are bisexual. This is in opposition to Kinsey's report that 80% of people are bisexual while 10% are exclusively heterosexual and 10% are exclusively gay.
