Americans were still coming out of the Great Depression, and during the first half of the 1940's, food was rationed. Canned goods such as Campbell's soup products were very popular and affordable, as were hotdogs and beans. Hearty homemade foods that could be made from canned and dry goods like chicken pot pie, as well as chili, stews, and soups that would last for several days and made to serve a large quantity of people. Also, many Americans had parents of European heritage, and were still making traditional recipes from their ancestry. Victory Gardens were popular during the war, because produce was so scarce, and so homegrown salads were a common, seasonal luxury. There were popular candy bars for that time, cigarette's, and Coca Cola products that were often shipped overseas to US soldiers. Also, some American soldiers started to like some of the British dishes they experienced when over in England.
