The right to own property was, rightly, regarded as the cornerstone of liberty. Owning property makes a person independent of others. If you are dependent on somebody else for your living and financial well being then your ability to exercise political freedom is circumscribed. Owning property also gives people a stake in society and a greater interest in public policy. Thus it encourages the public oversight of government necessary for the maintainence of free institutions. Michael Montagne
