What were republicans described as durin the 1800's?

From their creation and election of the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, in 1860 to about the 1880's they were the party that was against slavery. In the last twenty years of the century they became associated with big business and conservative economic policy. Despite a Progressive move headed by Teddy Roosevelt from 1900 to 1908, that's the way they have stayed for much of the twentieth century.
