What does the process of apotheosis mean?

In the context of ancient times, apotheosis means that a person becomes a God, for example in some of the ancient cultures, the ruler could become a God and his people would worship and pray to him/her. In contemporary times, it usually means that something or someone is perfect or close to ideal.
