While performing surgery in the Middle Ages was fraught with challenges and risks, it was not impossible. Surgeons, often barbers or skilled craftsmen, could perform procedures such as amputations, trepanations, and wound care using rudimentary tools. However, the lack of anesthesia, antiseptics, and a thorough understanding of anatomy made surgeries dangerous and often fatal. Despite these limitations, some patients did survive surgical procedures, demonstrating that surgery was indeed possible, albeit with high risks.
