What is gathering data in science?

It depends. If you're going an experiment. You take down notes of what is happening during the experiment. (E.G. If you are burning salt water, you would say, 'The water evaporates slowly, the salt spits occasionally but returns to its original grain state).

Or it could just mean, research the topic you are studying.
