What is the connection in studying Literature to enhancing one's personality?

Literature is so filled with struggles that all of us have to face at one time or another. It is, basically the story of human life, and if one can understand that, or try to, then one will be enhancing their ability to feel compassion and sympathy for those around us. By learning from other characters, we may choose to become like them, or not, and that develops personality.
