What signs do you look for if a child is gay?

You can't really diagnose gayness until a gay person comes to that conclusion for him- or herself. In the meantime, simply love the child the same as any child and have a home environment that is gay friendly so that if he or she IS gay, he or she also feels comfortable coming out eventually.
