State the purpose of using thin oil on an oil stone when sharpening hand tools?

The oil serves to to remove the heat of from friction between the oil stone and the parts of the tool in contact with it. It also washes away the products of wear, the swarf - the particles of stone and steel that are worn off by the grinding action. These are the same reasons that water is used on a grind stone.
