It's very easy remove all the screws/bolts around the starter cord The top should pull off easy to reveal the housing that the cord wraps around . AHA ... DJ_13 adds: 1) It is NOT easy to remove the bolts from the cover!! I had to use WD40 and a special pair of pliers. Took forever. There is a metal SPRING the cord is attached to. When you pull the reel out, the metal spring will uncoil rather RAPIDLY .. stay out of the way!! 2) No one has explained exactly HOW to wrap the spring up and add the cord in a manner to effectively cause the spring to coil up enough to start the engine. IF directions came with the lawn mower, written in English, and properly illustrated, it would be a whole lot easier to DIY !! I think that is not something the manufacturer supports!! GOOD LUCK!! I now know more about gas lawn mowers than I ever wanted to know!! (sigh....)
