Is horse meat haram or halal?

To my knowledge there's no prohibition of eating horse and since the horse was used in the time of prophet Mohammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)i would think there would be a command against it

Answer A society that relies on horses for transport is forbidden from consuming them as it may result in too much pressure on the horse population. If a society use their horses as a source of food then they shouldn't rely on them for transport.
