Members of Congress do not receive free health insurance for life; however, they are eligible to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, which offers various health insurance plans. They can choose from these plans and the government pays a portion of the premiums. After serving five years, former members can continue their coverage into retirement, but they must pay the full premium. Therefore, while they have access to health insurance options, it is not entirely free.
