Humanism places importance on the value and agency of people, preferring critical thinking and evidence to established doctrine or faith. During the Renaissance, the focus of education shifted from Medieval utilitarianism of the elite to cultural awareness and appreciation for many people, including women. Science, mathematics, religion, and logic were replaced with history, poetry, philosophy, grammar, and rhetoric. These subject became known as the Humanities.
