How did Freud impact visual arts?

I believe his impact on the visual arts could be seen in an art movement called Surrealism. The surrealist may have used different psychoanalytic techniques in their process. They used the techniques to allow their sub conscious mind to surface, thus allowing them to better represent their ideas.
