What was invented in England by Rowland Hill in 1837?

The postage stamp was invented in England in 1837 by a schoolmaster named Rowland Hill. Because of his efforts, for which he was knighted, the first postage stamp was issued on May 6, 1840. The British Penny Black stamp was engraved with the profile of Queen Victoria.
