Does school have to be in session to get a work permit?

Work permits are issued by both the state and the local school district. Depending on the states regulations on that permit; you might have to wait. Some states require a teacher or student counselor to prove that your grades are in good standing and if that is the case you will need to wait until school is back in session. ;)
