It hasn't ended. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state.

There was, before "Great Britain" came into being in 1707, a short period of non-monarcy, known as the Commonwealth, the republican period of government in England between the execution of Charles I in 1649 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660.
