What are Japanese comic book characters?

There are many characters in Japanese comic books (also known as manga for those who are well-acquainted with the term). As there are many publishers from various companies that have become big-time (as opposed to American comics most people would be usually aware of the two major ones: Marvel [now since owned by Disney] and DC), it's very difficult to keep track of the total number of them.
