What do baseball players wear on the thumb?

Baseball players wear a small padded ring around their thumb to space the bat away from their hand. It has the purpose of positioning the bat, in the proper location, through the hitting zone. Some hitters are late getting the head of the bat through this zone or may position their hands incorrectly as they roll their wrists.
