Why were tools the symbols of Saint Joseph?

St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus, was a carpenter. (See Mark 6:3) A carpenter uses his hands and his tools to work and over time St. Joseph came to be associated with workers and laborers. In 1955 May 1st was instituted as the feast day of "Saint Joseph the Worker".
