What does the market for event planners look like?

Project management positions whether corporate or individual took a major hit from the recession in 2008/2009. With less income comes less investment. Corporations could not pay people to be in charge of new ventures. In your situation of Event Planning I would assume the same thing. With less income means if you want something done your more likely to do it yourself. I run an event calendar for my hometown. Sad to say I most likely won't be next month.
