The most recent attempt to reduce the tilt of the Leaning Tower of Pisa occurred in the early 2000s, when a significant stabilization project was undertaken. Engineers used a method called "soil extraction," removing soil from underneath the tower's weaker side to allow it to settle more upright. This project successfully reduced the tilt by about 45 centimeters, stabilizing the tower and allowing it to remain safe for visitors. The tower now stands at a tilt of approximately 4 degrees, down from about 5.5 degrees prior to the intervention.
