Hawaii was never part of the British Commonwealth. It was a sovereign kingdom until its overthrow in 1893 and later became a U.S. territory in 1898. Although the British had some influence in Hawaii during the 19th century, particularly through trade and diplomacy, the islands were never formally integrated into the Commonwealth. Hawaii eventually became the 50th state of the United States in 1959.
