I was dumped by the girl I had planned on marrying. She left me for another guy but she told me that she wanted to remain friends. I absolutly refuse to talk to her even though I miss her like crazy so much that I cry sometimes. I am furious at what she did but that's out of my control. If you have dumped a guy but still HONESTLY want to remain friends, then step one would be to NOT see somebody else for at the very least a few months (not even coffee with some other guy). This may seem unreasonable but if you left him to be single then BE SINGLE. It will stop him from feeling like you traded him for someone else. The second step would be to give him time but to remain in contact with him. Write him a letter after a few weeks and ask him to write you one in return. Give him plenty of chance to get his feelings out. He will make you feel like a dick for dumping him but unfortunaly for you, he is 100% justified in feeling that way. In no way can anything he feels be labeled immature. Remember, you cut him, not the other way around. Let him get his verbal licks in (in the letter of course) and try to set up some sort of long-term, no physical contact line of communication. Don't reply frequent enough that you lead him on (bec he'll take even the slightest things you say as an indication that you want to get back together) but don't go too long in between letters that he feels "cast to the shadows". If you HONESTLY want to be friends you need to realize that you have just reset your relationship. You can't "step down" to friendship. You have gone to zero by dumping him and you need to build back up to a friendship. Now, if you have started seeing someone else then there is little chance he will ever talk to you again and I honestly can't blame him.
