What contact did Abel Tasman have with indigenous people?

Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, had limited contact with indigenous people during his voyages in the 17th century. In 1642, he encountered the Maori people in present-day New Zealand, but their initial interactions were hostile, resulting in violent conflicts. Tasman named the area he explored "Staten Landt," but it was later renamed New Zealand by another Dutch explorer, cartographer, and merchant, Joan Blaeu.
