Why Robert de niro tried kill Ronald Reagan?

Robert De Niro did not attempt to kill Ronald Reagan; instead, the actor's name was associated with the assassination attempt on Reagan due to the film "Taxi Driver." In the movie, De Niro's character, Travis Bickle, becomes obsessed with a presidential candidate, which inspired John Hinckley Jr. to shoot Reagan in 1981 in an effort to impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he believed he was mimicking from the film.
