Why? Because it doesn't want us digging it out of the ground.

How? It is made up of very fine long thin crystals, which are just about the right size to poke through individual cell walls and damage the internal structure of the cell, including damaging the DNA/RNA reproduction process, which is what makes it carcinogenic.
