Where was the first battle of the civil war and who won the battle?

Most of the US Civil War battles took place in Southern territory. Many battles were in Virginia and the eastern side of the Mississippi River. Slavery was a major issue that divided the US, however, the initial conflicts that recruited Northern soldiers was the idea to keep the nation undivided. The slavery issue came to the forefront based on what US President Lincoln called a "war measure". Namely his two Emancipation Proclamations. The assertion that slavery would still exist in North America if the Confederates won their independence is misguided speculation at best.
