First, look at the written bill. Check your records to see if you received a product or service on the date stated. Finally, if you did pay it, find the receipt and/or get a copy of the check you paid it with. Then call the original creditor and find out the status of the billing. If it has been a long time and a collection agency is trying to get you to pay, then delay until you get a copy of your credit report. Look at the item and if it says "charged off" you do not have to do anything else.
