What is the origin of the word 'Ace'?

From the Latin as, a unit, the name of a small Roman coin, possibly originally Etruscan and related to the Greek eis, meaning "one". It evolved into Old French as, meaning "one at dice" to describe the face of the die with only one mark on it.
