On a daily basis, Police see the worst society has to offer. They are surrounded by negativity, death and destruction of human lives and families. This is 8 to 10 hours a day, 4-5 days a week, every year for 5,10,20+ years. On top of attempting to help people with their problems, they go home at the end of every day and have to deal with their own problems. Think about it, no one ever calls the Police to say "hey I'm having a great day, come on over!". So even though, this is not representative of society as a whole, it is ALL Police deal with. They turn cynical due to constant stress of all stated above, plus public hatred, media hounding and criticism and pressure from superiors to perform and produce in the interest of public safety. Police fight a "battle" in all directions every day. With all of that on their mind every day, they come to expect the worst, become emotionally callused and detached. It takes a lot of understanding and first hand obs. of Police life to realize this. Plus people want to kill them... live with all that and see if it does not change you. I hope this helps
