What year was slime invented?

Slime, as we commonly know it today, was invented in 1976 by a toy company called Mattel. Initially marketed as "Gak," it was a green, gooey substance that became popular with children. Although similar substances have existed in various forms before then, the modern version of slime gained significant popularity in the late 1970s.
