DTP or Desktop Publishing refers to the process of layout and design on a computer for print materials such as magazines, newspapers, invitations, posters, books, etc.
So before computers it was done manually on typewriters or hand drawn & painted, on art boards, poster boards, canvases, etc. For mass productions the designs would then be printed with the usual printing methods (a complicated process of inking and rolling the original designs).
It really wasn't that long ago we were doing this. It all changed in the late 1970's or early 1980's when we began using computers for desktop publishing.
