The Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) ended with the surrender of Japan on August 6, 1945. Because of the war, China suffered severe economic devastation. Aside from the destruction of several major cities, such as Nanking, the Chinese lost half of the industrial equipment that the Japanese had installed in Manchuria to the Russians. Nationalists Army was weakened and the Communist army strengthened, which allowed them to defeat the Nationalists in the ensuing Chinese Civil War.
