The French perceive their appearance as an extension of their character. If you dress shabby then you are undependable and shabby; if you dress nicely then you are a decent, dependable person. Also, if you show up to a meeting or dinner in less then stellar clothing than you are telling the person(s) you are see that they are not worth the time that it takes to look good.
