Why are wedding rings exchanged?

In the original ritual only the man gave a ring to the woman, it was the symbol of "all my worldly goods" (and for quite a few men it was indeed all their worldly goods as they had had to sell much of what they had to buy the ring). The woman in most cases gave the man a "dowry," which is now replaced with a ring.
