Why do the leaves fall off trees?

When leaves fall off of a tree naturally it means the tree is preparing itself to go into 'hybernation' (like a winter sleep) to protect itself from frost damage or it is preparing for a dry period like some trees in savannah or desert climates to protect itself from dehydration.
