How does saving electricity help the environment?

Electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). Fossil fuels are finite and polluting, and are the main cause of global warming, not to mention the human toll taken on coal miners, soldiers in the Iraq War and oil being a commodity tightly controlled by few countries and having major economic impact on the entire world. Reducing one's use of electricity reduces reliance on coal and petroleum along with the amount on one's utility bill.

Renewable energy like wind turbines and solar energy are being utilized more and more to generate electricity.
