It's biological in part, and it's social in part. When boys are raised not to cry and to hold their emotions in, they grow up into men who do the same. However, there is some evidence that mean communicate about feelings differently from women. Women tend to prefer sitting face to face and disclose emotional information to other people in an indirect but forthcoming way. Men tend to prefer sitting side to side and disclose emotional information to other people while watching or taking part in some other activity, and when they do disclose emotional information is often tends to be a bit more direct but terse. Women who are frustrated by their male partners' inability to communicate their emotions might try sitting at a bar with them and chatting while watching a Baseball or football game on the bar TV, or while playing pool or something. It's actually a bit unreasonable to criticize men for communicating like men instead of like women when, in fact, women could also adapt to the male style of emotional communication.
