Capacitors are used in many different ways.
Here are a few instances where they are used:
- in amplifier circuits to isolate small signal circuitry from amplifier circuits' DC bias
- in power supplies to minimize AC ripple on the DC waveform
- in timer circuits to create specific patterns and frequencies
- with integrated circuits to prevent ripple from the power supply from reaching the IC
- in analog computation machines for creating integrators and differentiators
- in high voltage AC systems to "add VARs" to the system.
