Where can you find the names of those who died in World War 2?

The true death toll for WW2 will never be known. Estimates go from a low of around 60 million to as high as 80 million.

The vast majority of those who died were civilians, largely in China and the USSR. These people were, for the most part, never catalogued or accounted for, and far too many places were totally wiped out, leaving no one to record their passing.

Most countries tried to keep a list of those who were killed in military service, but even these records are incomplete, drastically so in countries which either had most of their records destroyed, or which suffered overwhelming casualties.

The true answer is that there is nothing approaching a complete list of the dead from WW2. Perhaps as many as half may have had their place and time of death known to someone at some time, but the reality is that probably less than a quarter were kept in a record which survived.

The United States is an exception to this rule, in that the home country and bureaucracy was virtually untouched by the war, and well over 95% of all Kia would have been officially recorded, with the names of the MIA also noted. Such records are available from the National Archives, part of the Federal Government.
