People defined as witches, in varying cultures such as the Zulu, may use herbs as part of folk medicine in a manner similar to herbalists or their use may be part of the witches' spiritual practice including the casting of spells.
Sometimes the two can cross over, European witches in the Early Modern Period were reputed to use hallucinogenic herbs as part of their rituals. Their belief system provided the interpretation of why the plant worked and what the hallucinations were.
