Why were spartan women physically fit?

Good question. This was so that they would bear strong children. The Spartans believed that strong women would make strong babies.

In addition to this, women were partly responsible for keeping the helots at bay whilst the men went to war. Since the helots heavily outnumbered Spartans, it was imperative for women to be able to keep the helots in fear.
