It usually depends on the cause of death. An example would be, if someone was shot in the chest, it normally wouldn't take much time to discover the cause of death.

Another example would be if someone has over dosed on drugs or is poisoned. It usually takes longer because the entire body has to be opened up, x-rayed, and tested for a complete and accurate report.

A third example could be that, some autopsies don't occur until someone has been dead for several years. If a family member or police expect foul play. A Court may order that the deceased individual be removed from their grave, and sent in for a detailed and full examination, to base the facts on the cause of death.
